Karva Chauth vrat (Karwa Chouth, Kadwa Chauth) is celebrated in North India in Kartik month. Karva Chauth 2011 date is 15 October 2011, Saturday. It falls in Ashwin month as per Marathi and Gujarati calendars. It is a special festival for married women and would-be brides. They observe upvaas (fasting) and puja for the longer life of their husband and for marital bliss. The vrat falls on the fourth day after Ashwin Purnima or Kojagari Purnima Lakshmi Puja.
Karwa Chouth is considered as one of the biggest festivals in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
Women start their Karva Chauth vrat fasting before the sunrise and observe the fast very strictly even without drinking water. They conclude and break their fasting after seeing and worshipping Moon God (after moonrise). Karwa Chauth festival is also celebrated as Sankashti Chaturthi. On Sankashti Chauth, Lord Ganesha is worshipped and upvaas is observed to please Ganesha.
Along with India, Karva Chauth is also celebrated in USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, France, Canada, UAE (Dubai), Muscat (Saudi Arabia) & many other countries where North Indian population is in considerable percentage. Karva Chauth 2011 date is October 15 in all the countries except New Zealand. In New Zeland Karva Chauth is on October 16, 2011.
