Today (11 November 2012) is Dhanteras or Dhan Trayodashi. Hindupad wishes its readers a Happy Dhanteras. It is the first day of Diwali in India.
Ashwin masa Krishna Trayodashi is celebrated as Dhan Trayodashi in calendars followed in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. But it is considered as Kartik Maas Krishna Trayodashi day in North India calendars.
Dhanteras is considered as good time to perform Lakshmi Pujan, and to purchase gold and silver. This day marks the beginning of Go Triratra Vrata. Govatsa Dwadashi vrat, also known as Nadini Vrat, is also observed on this day.
Goddess Lakshmi and Go Mata (cow) are considered as most auspicious sources of living in Hinduism. On this auspicious muhurat, Lakshmi Puja and Go Pooja are best deeds to perform.
Lord Dhanvantari, the God of Ayurveda (appears with Amrit kalasa), is also worshipped on this day. Dhanteras is also known as Dhanvantari Jayanti.
