Haridwar Kawad Yatra is a processional pilgrimage of Kanwaris (devotees of Lord Shiva) to Haridwar Shiva Temples. Kanwar Yatra takes place in Shravan Month as per North Indian Hindi calendars (July – August). Earlier, Kanwar Yatra was performed in Bhado month but in 1960 Shrabani Mela started in Shravan Month and extended up to Dashara.
In 2020, Haridwar Kawad Yatra begins on July 6. Sawan Shivratri in 2020 date is July 18. Sawan Shivratri, Hariyali Amavasya (Shravan Amavasya), Hariyali Teej, Shravan Purnima, and Shravan Somvar (Mondays in Shravan Month) are considered highly auspicious during this Yatra.
This holy yatra was taken by the saints and holy sages in early days, which later got an addition of elderly people, who used to pilgrim every year, but now hundreds and thousands of people, from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, of young to old age, including woman and sometimes children, has started participating in Yatra, and kanwar mela.
On their way, the kanwariyas chant ‘BOL BAM, BAM BAM’, ‘BAM BAM BHOLE or HAR HAR MAHADEV’ together.
