Garuda Kalyanam | Divine Marriage of Garuda, Unnati and Vinayaka

Lord Vishnu with Shiva Garuda Brahma

Lord Vishnu with Shiva Garuda Brahma

Lord Garuda is a divine vehicle of Lord Vishnu, and he is the son of Kashyapa and Vinata, his brother is Aruna and his consorts are Unnati and Vinayakaa. He can be seen rarely along with his consort in the temples. Lord Garuda contains sufficient powers enough to carry the entire earth on his shoulders. Before becoming a mount of Lord Vishnu, he has even fought with him, in order to exhibit his skills before him. The name of Lord Garuda was mentioned several times in the Vedas, and also in Puranas and Upanishads. In the pictures, he can be seen carrying Lord Vishnu on his shoulders.

Before several millions of years ago, after becoming the mount of Lord Vishnu, Garuda had got married with Ma Unnati and Ma Vinayakaa, who were believed to be the daughters of an ancient sage. Garuda’s marriage was mentioned only in a brief manner in some of the holy texts of Hindus. In front of the gatherings of the sages and gods, the marriage between Garuda and his consorts took place at the present day Tirumala Hills, and the marriage was conducted by his parents and by the divine couple, Lord Vishnu and Ma Lakshmi Devi.

The consorts of Lord Garuda contain good knowledge, wisdom and courage, and they act as the dutiful wives of Lord Garuda. They also serve as the divine attendants to Ma Lakshmi Devi in the Vaikunta. While their eyes watch their consort Lord Garuda affectionately, their lips would chant the mantra, “OM SRI LAKSHMI NARAYANA NAMAHA”. It seems they live in the Vaikunta for several millions of years, and similar to Garuda, they also had attained the “IMMORTAL STATUS”, and there is no end for them.

During ancient times, Vishnu devotees used to celebrate the marriage event of Lord Garuda in a grand manner during the Tamil month of Margazhi, but in course of time, the worship of Lord Garuda was gradually decreased, by considering him to be a minor deity. But, however, still most of the Vishnu devotees worship him by considering him as the Divine Vehicle of Lord Vishnu.

By worshipping Lord Garuda and his pious consorts, Ma Unnati and Vinayakaa, we could get good health and wealth and also we would attain good knowledge, wisdom and courage, and we would be relieved from various Doshams like Naga, Pitru and Brahmahati Dosham.
