Gandham Amavasya

Gandham Amavasya is celebrated in Simhachalam Varaha Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple, Andhra Pradesh. In 2019, Gandham Amavasya date is May 4.

It falls on Chaitra Amavasya, three days prior to Akshaya Tritiya Chandanotsavam. On Akshaya Tritiya day, Simhachalam Appanna (Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy) blesses devotees with his Nijaroopa (original form) – Nijaroopa Darshanam.

On Gandham Amavasya, the fishing community in and around Simhachalam takes part in rituals and celebrations. The fishermen observe vigil in the night and perform special rituals to witness the grandeur of Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy (Appanna). They also welcome Appanna for Akshaya Tritiya Chandanotsavam.

Some years back Chandanotsavam was celebrated as Gandham Amavasya on Amavasya day at Simhachalam Narasimha Swamy Temple and not on Akshaya Tritiya.
