Today, 10 October 2013 Durga Puja begins in Bengal, Assam, Tripura and other Eastern parts of India. Durga Shashti marks the beginning of Durga Puja.
Apart from Kolkata, Durgapur, Howrah, Darjeeling, Asansol, Bardhaman and other cities and town of West Bengal, in the major cities of India like Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Chennai, Bangalore, etc.. the Bengali communities celebrate Durga Puja in grand scale.
According to Bangla panchangs such as Gupta Press Panjika and Vishudh Siddhant, Maa Durga’s arrival is on a palanquin (dola) this year, while she will leave on an elephant. Goddess Durga’s arrival on a dola is a bad omen as it brings drought and floods. However, her departure on an elephant is auspicious as it that will bring good harvest and greenery next year.
Bangladesh, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai (UAE), USA, UK, Australia, etc.. are the major countries where Bengali communities celebrated Durga Puja with utmost gusto and enthusiasm.
