Durga immersion is a matter of pollution in holy river of Ganga in Kanpur. But, Durga visarjan 2013 will be a pollution-free event. The Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Municipal Corporation of Kanpur are striving to implement this program without any hurdles. Durga Visarjan culminates the nine-day festival Navratri or Durga Puja.
In an unique effort to make Ganga pollution free, Durga idols will be immersed in make-shift ponds instead of the usual practise of immersing them in the river here. Mayor said that in Kanpur, at around 30 places Durga Puja is held in big way every year and once the puja gets over, the idols are immersed as per tradition in Ganga.
Since, the Durga idols contain toxic chemicals in form of colours, it pollutes Ganga, Patni said adding that he has already got a nod from 12 Puja Committees and rest will also give their consent on this issue.
