Sri Ekaambareswarar temple is based in the sub-town known as Sowcarpet, in the district of Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu in Southern India. The principal deity of this temple is Ekaambareswarar (Lord Shiva) and his consort is Kamakshi.
The holy tree of this temple is Mango tree. The holy water of this temple is Kamba River. The agamam or pooja of this temple is known as Kaamikam. This temple is nearly 500-1000 years old in this region. The historical name of this spot is none. As per to the Hindu religious scholars and pundits, this particular temple is one of the ancient Lord Shiva temple in Chennai.
The festivals of this shrine are all Lord Shiva related festivals are grandly celebrated with devotional and dedicational importance.
Other festivals of this temple are 18 days’ Brahmotsavam in Panguni, Vaikasi Visakam in May-June, Sanippeyarchi (shifting of the planet Sani-Saturn), Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January, Aadippooram, Vinayaka Chaturthi, Panguni Uthiram, Vaikasi Thiruvadhirai in May-June, Maha Shivrathri in February-March, Margazhi Tiruvadirai in December-January, Purattasi Navarathri in September-October, Mondays of Karthikai Tamil month covering November-December, Thai Poosam in January-February and Aipasi Annabishekam in October-November. These festivals and auspicious days are celebrated in grand manner in this temple.
The shrine is open for all the Hindus from 6.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. On all the festive days and auspicious days, the shrine is marked with whole day kept open for devotees and pilgrims.
In this temple, Lord Shiva is a swayambu murthy. Special pujas and rituals are conducted on Shivarathri day and all the auspicious days related to Lord Shiva at this particular shrine. The temple is open from 6.00 am to 12.00 noon and from 4.00 pm to night 9.30 for all.
