Chitragupta Puja 2026 | Chitragupt Pooja on Chaitra Purnima

Chitragupta Puja is observed on Chaitra Purnima, the Full Moon day in Chaitra month. It is one of the big festivals for Kayasta sect of people. In 2026, Chaitra Purnima Chitragupta Puja date is April 2.

Chitragupt is believed to be the accountant or record keeper of Lord Yamas register Agra-Sandhaani. On Chaitra Purnima day, Chaitragupta is worshipped with shodashopachar puja.

Chaitra Poornima Chaitragupta pooja is celebrated in a grand manner in Tamil Nadu. At Kanchipuam, and some temples in Chennai, the image of Chaitragupta is taken out in a procession.

On this day devotees take holy dip in the river Chitra. Literally, Chitragupta means the hidden picture but he records our every pap and punya (sin and good deed). Chitragupta Puja is also celebrated during Diwali as Chitragupta Jayanti (Dawat Puja) on Bhai Dhooj.

Chitragupta Puja on Chaitra Purnima is a special worship dedicated to Chitragupta, the divine accountant who records the karma of all beings and assists Yama, the god of death.

This observance is performed on Chaitra Purnima (the full moon day of the Chaitra month in the Hindu lunar calendar). The day is considered highly auspicious for seeking forgiveness for past karmas and praying for righteous living.

Significance of Chaitra Purnima

Chaitra Purnima is the first full moon of the Hindu year in many traditions. On this day devotees:

  • Worship Chitragupta for purification of karma.

  • Pray for truthful life and righteous conduct.

  • Perform charity, fasting, and spiritual activities.

This day is also associated with other observances like Hanuman Jayanti in several regions.

Chitragupta Puja Rituals on Chaitra Purnima

1. Sankalp (resolution)
Devotees take a vow to perform the puja and seek forgiveness for mistakes.

2. Worship of writing tools
Pens, notebooks, and account books are placed before the deity since Chitragupta keeps records of karma.

3. Offerings

  • Sandalwood paste (Chandan)

  • Flowers

  • Incense

  • Fruits and sweets

4. Mantra Japa
Common mantra:

“Om Shri Chitraguptaya Namah”

Devotees chant this mantra to receive blessings for wisdom, honesty, and righteous actions.

Chitragupta Puja on Chaitra Purnima symbolizes:
