Brahmamuhurtha (Brahmi Muhurtham), the Time of Brahman, is the 14th muhurtha Kala of the night. As one Muhurta is a period of 48 minutes, the whole night consists of 15 muhurthams.
Brahma Muhurtham begins one hour and 36 minutes before sunrise and ends 48 minutes before Suryodayam (Sunrise). This is the penultimate muhurta of the night in Hindu Astrology.
This period is considered an auspicious time for all practices of yoga and most appropriate for meditation, worship or any other religious practice. Spiritual activities performed early in the morning are said to have a greater effect than in any other part of the day.
Brahma Muhurt is considered as the most auspicious time, which would occur one and a half hours before sunrise, and as the name implies, it is described as the time for the creator god Brahma. Most of the learned scholars, temple priests and Vedic Pundits used to get up during the Brahma Muhurt time, in order to start doing their daily activities. Performing Surya Namaskaram is considered as a good activity during the Brahma Muhurt time.
Ancient sages used to perform pujas to the Gods/Goddesses after taking bath in the holy Rivers like Ganges, Yamuna and Godavari, and they would do it on the auspicious Brahma Muhurt time.
Students also must be encouraged to get up early during the Brahma Muhurt time, and they must be made to study their subjects during that time, since during that time, they would be having enough grasping powers to easily study the subjects. Most of the Hindu marriages also would be performed during the Brahma Muhurt time.
