Bhishma Ashtami or Bhishmashtami is observed on Shukla paksha Ashtami in Magh month (January – February). In 2026, Bhishma Ashtami date is January 26.

Bhishma is known as the Kuru Vamsa Pitamaha (grandfather of Kaurava) and is described as the Lords of the Lord by Sri Krishna. As per the Mahabharata, Bhishma laid himself on the bed of arrows on Magh Shukla Ashtami day.

Bhishma Ashtami is celebrated with utmost fervor in Vishnu temples and ISKCON Temples. The five days beginning from Bhishma Ashtami to Bhishma Dwadasi are known as Bhishma Panchaka vrata.

Bhishma Tharpanam is performed on this day. Offering Tharpanam to Bhishma will make the devotee free from all his sins and makes him eligible for attainment of Moksha.

Significance

  • Bhishma chose the moment of his death during the Mahabharata war, preferring to leave his mortal body during the auspicious period of Uttarayana (northward journey of the sun), which is considered highly auspicious in Hindu tradition.

  • He was renowned for his vow of celibacy, dedication to duty (dharma), and loyalty to his father’s throne, which are qualities celebrated and revered on this day.

  • The day is considered highly beneficial for performing auspicious deeds, especially for removing Pitru dosha (ancestral curses) and for childless couples praying for a son.

  • Bhishma’s life and values inspire devotees to practice discipline, truthfulness, and spiritual clarity.

Rituals and Observances

  • Devotees observe fasts and perform Bhishma Ashtami Puja to receive the blessings of Bhishma Pitamaha.

  • A key ritual is the Bhishma Ashtami Snan (holy bath), often conducted in rivers, combined with offerings of boiled rice and sesame seeds (til) to ancestors and Bhishma.

  • Tarpan rituals for ancestors are performed to remove sin and ensure peace for departed souls.

  • Special pujas and ceremonies are held in temples, especially Vishnu temples and ISKCON centers, where devotees chant mantras and pay homage to Bhishma’s virtues.
