The Ballygunge Cultural Association has chosen the theme “Rajasthani Folk Art” for this year’s Durga Puja. Rajasthan is among the richest states in India in terms of art and culture and boasts of a rich and varied folk culture from villages which is really symbolic of the State and the people of Rajasthan have shown a strong desire to decorate their adverse surroundings with intricate patterns and a riot of colours.
This pandal would seek to recreate the popular motifs and art forms that adorn the walls of houses of rural Rajasthan complemented by Rajasthani adornments. Also there will be live performances of Kathaputli and Kalbelia by folk artists from Rajasthan. While Katputli is the popular string puppet theatre, Kalbelia is one of the most sensuous tribal dance forms of Rajasthan that is part of the community celebrations set to songs based on stories from folklore and mythology. Also food stalls with Rajasthani food specialities and handicrafts would be set up.
The organisation was initiated in the year 1951 and is one of the most famous pandals of South kolkata for its serene atmosphere, artistic decorations and staging of cultural programs by renowned artists from all parts of Bengal. Some of the popular awards by the organisation are mentioned here:
