Ayanamsha | Ayanabhaga

Ayanamsha in Hindu astrology is the angular difference or correction factor between the Tropical (Sayana) zodiac used in Western astrology and the Sidereal (Nirayana) zodiac used in Vedic astrology. It accounts for the precession of the equinoxes, a slow westward shift of the Earth’s rotational axis relative to fixed stars, which causes the starting point of the Tropical zodiac (zero degrees Aries) to gradually move away from the fixed star backdrop.

Key Points about Ayanamsha

The Tropical zodiac is based on the Sun’s position relative to the equinox points and moves slowly against the fixed stars due to axial precession.

The Sidereal zodiac remains fixed relative to the distant stars, so the difference or offset between these two zodiac systems is called the Ayanamsha.

Ayanamsha is essential in Vedic astrology to convert planetary positions from Tropical coordinates (astronomical calculations) to Sidereal positions used in horoscope interpretation.

The current value of Ayanamsha is approximately 24 degrees and increases slowly over time, roughly by one degree every 72 years.

The most widely used Ayanamsha in Vedic astrology is the Lahiri Ayanamsha, officially recognized by the Indian government and used for standardizing Hindu religious calendars and predictions.

The formula used is:

Different astrologers may use slightly different values of Ayanamsha, such as Raman or Krishnamurti Ayanamsha, but Lahiri’s is the most popular.

Without accounting for Ayanamsha, planetary positions if calculated directly from Western astronomy would not align correctly with the Sidereal Nakshatras and signs crucial to Vedic predictive methods.

In summary, Ayanamsha is a critical astronomical and astrological concept that enables accurate calculation and interpretation of celestial positions in Hindu astrology, bridging Western astronomical data with Vedic sidereal principles.
