Attukal Pongala (Pongala Mahotsavam) at Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, Thiruvananthapuram is one of the largest religious congregation and the largest women congregation in the world. In 2013, Attukal Pongala festival is being celebrated from February 18 to February 27. And the world popular Attukal Pongala Hearth is on February 26, Tuesday.
Attukal Pongala is a ten-day festival celebrated in Makaram Masam and Kumbha Masam (February – March) at Attukal Bhagavathy Temple. The festival begins with Kappukettu and Kudiyiruthu. During this, the idol of Bhagavathy Devi is decked with attractive bangles. The major celebration of the 10-day event, the Attukal Pongala Mahotsavam falls on the ninth day. The festival concludes with ‘Kuruthitharpanam’ in the night on 10th day.
