Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Kerala is one of the ancient temples in South India and is popularly described as the Sabarimala of the Women, as women form the major portion of devotees.
The Attukal Pongal has made its way to the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest religious congregation of women on a single day. Pilgrims from all over the country who visit Sri Padmanabha Swamy temple make it a point to visit this temple without which the visit is considered incomplete.
The Pongala Mahotsavam is the most important festival of the Attukal Bhagavathi Temple. The offering of Pongal is a special practice prevalent in the southern part of Kerala and Tamilnadu. It is a ten day programme commencing on the karthika star of the malayalam month of makaram- kumbham (february-march) and closing with the sacrificial offering known as kuruthi tharpanam at night.
On the ninth day of the festival , the world famous Attukal Pongala Mahotsavam takes place. The entire area of about 5 kilometer radius around the temple premises becomes a common ground for observing pongala rituals . During this time, lakhs of women devotees from all religions assemble near the temple and offer pongal.
