Today, 28 August 2013 is Ashtami Rohini festival. It is Sri Krishna Janmashtami festival in Kerala. In Kerala and Tamil Nadu, or Sri Krishna Janmashtami, Gokulashtami, Janmashtami, Krishnashtami, Saatam Aatham, Sri Krishna Jayanthi, Sri Jayanti, is observed on Rohini nakshatra day in Chingam month of Malayalam calendar.
In North Indian states Sri Krishna Jayanti is celebrated on Krishna Paksha Ashtami in Bhadrapada month and in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Maharashtra Krishna Janmashtami festival is celebrated in Shravan month. Ashtami Rohini marks the birthday or Jayanthi of Lord Sri Krishna.
In Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Ashtami Rohini or Krishnashtami festival is celebrated for two days – the first day is Krishnashtami and the second day is Kalashtami.
In Kerala, Ashtami Rohini is celebrated with utmost devotion and enthusiasm. In Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple, large number of Krishna devotees attends the pujas and rituals on Ashtami Rohini day.
Appam and Palpayasam, the special recipes made of rice paste and jaggery, are offered to Lord Krishna in Guruvayur temple. Special feasts and fairs are conducted during Ashtami Rohini festival in Krishna temples in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
