Sri Veerabhadra Swamy Temple, in Kumbakonam is close to Mahamaham Tank Moolavar
The temple facing west with a three tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam and Rishabam are under a mandapam. Vinayagar and Arumugar welcomes us with a cheerful smile. Moolavar Veerabhadra Swamy appears in brave form with standing posture who contains 4 hands. Bow, sword and other weapons are in the hand. Dakshinamurthy, Ottakoothar, Bhadrakali and Rajarajeshwari deities can be found in this temple.
The total temple was constructed with bricks and cement concrete. The original Temple belongs to Chozha period and renovated during Thanjavur nayaks period.
The temple is under the control of Veera Saiva Periya madam, and presently headed by Sri Jagadguru Neelakanda Saranga Desikenthra Maha Swamigal.
As per the legend, Veerabhadra was created by Shiva for destroying Daksha’s yagna, without giving invitation to Shiva. Ma Parvati as Dakshayani was the daughter of Daksha. Veerabhadra as agora Veerabhadra destroyed the Yagna and chopped Daksha’s head. Latter a goat’s head was replaced as per Shiva’s order.
Poojas are conducted by the VeeraShaivas, who has got the Deeksha from the Veera Saiva madam.
The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

The divine rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswathi, Narmada, Cauvery, Godavari, Thungabadra, Krishna and Sarayu are considered as “Nava Kanniyar”. People dip into these divine rivers to get rid of their sins. But these rivers are affected by the sins of the people.
The “Nava Kanniyar” met Lord Shiva and seek his advice to get rid of their sins accumulated by the people’s holy dip. Lord shiva adviced them to have a holy dip into the “Mahamagam Tank” of Kumbakonam. Lord Shiva ordered “Sri Agora Veerabadhara Swamy” to accompany them as a guard. Thus, in this temple Sri Agora Veerabadhra resides and showers his blessings to the Devotees. It is nearly 1000 years old temple.There is a separate shrine for “Sri Badhra Kali” in this temple who safeguards Sri Agrora Veerabadhra Swamy.
Sri Veerabadhra Swamy also called as “Ganga Veereswara”. Lord Viswanathar ,Sri Visalakshi, Sri Dhakshanamoorthi, Sri Rajarajeswari, Sri Moorka Nayanar(one of the 63 significant Lord Shiva’s devotees called as “Nayanmars”), Sri vinayaga are also shower the blessings from their respective shrines at this temple to the devotees.

This temple facing the western direction, the main deity Sri Kasi Viswanathar also facing the west.
