Agastheeswarar Temple, Villivakkam, Chennai

Sri Agastheeswarar temple is situated in the town known as Villivakkam, in the district of Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu in Southern India. The primary deity of this temple is Agastheeswarar (Lord Shiva) and his consort is Swarnambikai. The festival deity is Somaskandar.

The holy tree of this temple is Vilwa. The holy water of this temple is Angaraka Theertham. The agamam or pooja of this temple is called as Shivagama. This temple is approximately 500 years old in this region. The historical name of this spot is Vilwaranyam.

The important festivals of this shrine are 10 day Brahmmotsavam following Vaikasi Visakam in May-June; Tiruvadhirai in December-January, 1008 Conch abishek in Karthikai (November-December, Navarathri in September-October; Panguni Wedding Festival in March-April, Barring two months -Vaikasi (May-June) and Aani (June-July),  Masi Magam Brahmmotsavam in February-March, Panguni Uthiram in March-April, Vaikasi Visakam in May-June;  Navarathri in September-October, Shivarathri in Feburary-March and Skanda Sashti in October-November. Other important festivals are New Year day according to Georgian calendar and Hindu traditional calendar, Deepavali and Pongal.

According to the local legends, “Planet Jupiter-Guru Bhagwan is on the direct grace of Mother Ambika. Praying to Ambica will free the devotee of the adverse aspects of Jupiter. This is a rare design in this temple. Planet Mars is under the Arasa-Bodhi tree on the banks of the sacred theertha. The temple is also known as Mars Temple – Sevvai KOIL.” The temple is open for all the Hindus from 6.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.
