Sri Aazhi Kandeeswarar temple is located in the sub-town named Idaikattoor, in the district of Sivaganga, in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. The main deity of this temple is Aazhi Kandeeswarar, Manikandeeswarar (Lord Shiva) and his consort is Soundarya Nayaki. The holy tree of this temple is Vilwa. The holy water of this temple is Vaigai. The agamam or pooja of this temple is known as Sivagama. This temple is nearly 500-1000 years old in this region. The historical name of this place is none.
With special puja and rituals, Shivarathri is marked in this shrine. The other important days of festivity in this shrine are with flag hoisting Chithirai Brahmmotsavam in April-May, car festival on Pooram star day, the 13 day celebrations in the month of Masi (February-March), Vaikasi Visakam in May-June, Navarathri in September-October, Tirukarthikai in November-December, Maha Shivrathri in Febuary –March, Annabishekam, , Arudra Darshan in December-January, Thaipoosam in January-February, Panguni Uthiram in March-April and Skanda Sashti in October-November. Lord Shiva grants His special darshan to all the pilgrims and devotees.
The shrine’s specialty is that Lord Shiva is a swayambumurthy here. The temple is open for all from 6.00 a.m. to 8.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. According to the local legends, “As a tradition, the shrine for Navagraha-9 planets is on the northeastern side in Shiva temples. It is at the border of this place on the northeastern side as separate temple. Sage Idaikadar appears in a penance posture.” It is one of the most sought after ancient temple in south India.
