Gayatri Japam is observed today, 14 August 2011, among the Brahmin communities in India. It is observed on following day of Shravana Purnima. On this day Gayatri Japam, the Supreme Mantram of all Hindu prayers is chanted. As new Gayatri dharana or Yagnopavitha Dharana (Avani Avittam / Upakarma) is performed on Shravan Purnima day, Gayatri Japam is performed on Krishna Paksha Pratipada tithi in Shravana masam.
Gayatri Japam is mainly performed in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and some parts of Maharashtra.
