Today, 1 September 2011, is Ganesh Chaturthi (Vinayaka Chavithi or Parthiv Ganpati Pujan). It falls on fourth day in Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapad month as per all lunar Hindu calendars. Ganeshotsav, a 10-day festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha, who is known as the destroyer of obstacles (Vighna nashaka & Vighnadhipathi), is celebrated in spectacular manner in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Nagpur, Nashik & all other cities in Maharashtra; Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam (Vizag) & Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh; Surat & Ahmedabad in Gujarat states of India.
The tallest Ganesh idol of 108-foot for Ganesh Chaturthi 2011 is built in Vizag. In Andhra Pradesh, there is a strong competition in worshipping tall idols. Khairatabad Ganesh idol in Hyderabad is hugely popular among tallest Ganesh idols.
Ganpati idols in Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav of Mumbai & Pune have the grandeur in attractive celebrations. Lalbaugcha Raja Ganpati & GSB Seva Mandal Ganesh in Sion are among two most popular Ganesh mandals in Mumbai.
Not only in India, Ganesh festival is also celebrated in other countries where considerable Indian Hindu population live. In USA, UK, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Dubai, Muscat & France the festival celebrations touch high ends.
