Vishnu Deepam, Sokkappanai: Karthigai Deepam Festival in Tamil Nadu

Vishnu Deepam is a festival observed on Pournami day in Karthigai masam as per the traditional Tamil panchangam. In 2025, Vishnu Deepam date is December 3.

This day is a major auspicious occasion for Vaishnava sect of devotees. Vishnu Deepam is also observed as Karthigai Deepam. On this day, devotees clean their houses and temples of Lord Vishnu to decorate the places with Deepams (lamps).

It is believed that on this day King Maha Bali was pressed down into the Netherworld (Pathala Lokam) by Lord Vamana. Vishnu Deepam is celebrated with much gusto in Sri Ranganath swamy temple in Sri Rangam, Parthasarathy Temple in Chennai, Ulahalanda Perumal Temple in Kanchipuram, and Varadaraja Temple in Chennai.

Festival Timing and Rituals

  • Vishnu Deepam usually falls in late November or early December during Kartika Pournami, aligned with the full moon in the Tamil month of Karthigai.

  • Sokkappanai is the ceremonial bonfire lit at Vishnu temples, often in the evening, as a symbolic act of light conquering darkness.

  • This festival has deep Vaishnavite association, found mainly in Vishnu (Perumal) shrines in Tamil Nadu.

Legend and Symbolism

  • The core legend is based on Lord Vamana’s (Vishnu) Trivikrama avatara, where his three cosmic strides represent:

    • The first step: Uttarayana (northern solstice)

    • The second step: Vernal equinox

    • The third step: Autumnal equinox, where Mahabali is sent to the netherworld

  • Lighting the Sokkappanai/bonfire marks this cosmic event and its spiritual significance in cosmic order.

  • In some temple traditions, this festival is merged or aligned with broader Karthigai Deepam observances, focusing on the defeat of darkness and the manifestation of divine light.

Regional Significance

  • While Sokkappanai bonfires are common in many Tamil temples for both Vishnu and Shiva, the Vishnu Deepam festival specifically honors Vishnu’s Trivikrama form.

  • The timing and manner of observance can vary by temple and community, sometimes being held on the full moon or the Krittika star day, but always centering around Kartika Pournami.

Vishnu Deepam and the Sokkappanai ritual beautifully unite cosmic symbolism with communal celebration, emphasizing the enduring power of light and divinity in the Vaishnavite tradition.
