This article briefly tells the story of Sayana Ekadasi or vrat katha of Sayana Ekadashi which is observed on Shukla Paksha Ekadashi in Ashada month. Sayana Ekadasi is also popular as Devsayani Ekadasi, Ashadi Ekadasi, Vishnu Shayana Ekadashi, Harivasara Ekadashi, Tholi Ekadasi or Pedda Ekadasi etc. Sayana Ekadasi vrat katha is mentioned in the Bhavishya-uttara Purana as a conversation between Lord Sri Krishna and Yudhistira.
There was a King called Mandhata in Surya Vamsha. He was very noble and always spoke truth and involved with many auspicious deeds. In his kingdom once a severa drought occurred by which a large number of people and animals were killed and many were suffering. To get rid of the drought, he performed many vratas, pujas, homas, but there was no relief.
On the advice of Sage Angira he performed Sayana Ekadasi vrata on Ashada Shukla Ekadashi. With the glory and merits of Sayani Ekadasi, King Mandhata and his people lived happily.
