Raksha Bandhan (Rakhi Purnima, Rakhi festival) is one of the biggest festivals in Hinduism. Raksha Bandhan 2012 date is August 2(Tuesday). Raksha bandhan is celebrated on Shravan Purnima, the Full Moon day in Shravan month (August) . Rakhi Purnima festival highlights the eternal love and affection between brother and sister.

On Rakhi Purnima day various rituals are observed in different parts of India. Narali Purnima is celebrated on Rakhi Purnima day during which fisherman communities in Maharashtra and Konkan regions worship the Sea God and Earth.

Central regions of India like Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand celebrate Rakhi Poornima as Kajari Purnima or Kajri Poornima.

In Andhra Pradesh, Jandhyala Purnima is celebrated on Rakhi festival. The main ritual of this festival is changing Jandhyam or Yagnopaveetham, the sacred thread. Avani Avittam is the similar ritual followed in Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Rakhi Pournami day.
