Margashirsha Poornima or Margashira Purnima is the Full Moon in Margashirsha Maas in Hindu Calendar. In 2017, Margashira Purnima date is December 3.

It is celebrated as Dattatreya Jayanti (Datta Jayanthi / Datta Purnima).

This Poonam is also known by various names – Maha Margashirsha, Naraka Purnima and Korala Purnima in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

As Margashira Masam is the favorite month for Lord Krishna (Vishnu), Lakshmi Narayana Vratham is observed on Purnima day. Satyanarayana Swamy Vratham is also celebrated by devotees in many places. It is considered auspicious to perform ‘Chandra Vratham’ on this day.

Korala Purnima vratham is observed on this day in Andhra Pradesh. Korala Ammavaru (Chitragupta’s sister) is worshipped on this day.

Margashirsha Purnima marks the end of Margashirsha month in North Indian Hindi calendars and the next day Poush Month begins.
