Kharchi Pooja in Agartala, Tripura

Kharchi Puja (Kharchi Festival) is a week-long festival celebrated at Chaturdasha Devta temple in Agartala, Tripura. It is celebrated in Ashada month. In 2014, Kharchi Puja date is July 5.

It is a unique cultural and traditional tribal feast in Tripura. The term ‘Kharchi’ means auspicious in tribal language of Tripura. Though it is a tribal festival, 14 Goddesses are worshipped. Both the tribal priests and Hindu Brahmins participate in pujas.

The most important feature of Kharchi Puja is – the idols are kept locked in a room throughout the year and shown to devotees during this week-long festival only. A large number of devotees all across India visit the temple and enjoy Kharchi puja festival.

In 2013, Kharchi Puja date was July 16.

In 2012, Kharchi Puja date was June 27.
