Kaumudi Puja, Kaumudi Utsav on Sharad Poornima

Kaumudi Puja, also known as Kaumudi Utsav, is a ritual observed on Sharad Purnima or the Full Moon day in Ashwin month in some parts of India. In 2013, Kaumudi Puja date is October 18.

It is observed in West Bengal, Orissa, Gujarat, Maharashtra and some other parts of India.

Literally, Kaumudi means the moon light. It is believed that on Sharad Purnima day, moon light will have some strange yet great powers to relieve the mankind from some skin diseases and ill effects. In some regions, Indra Puja is also performed on Sharad Purnima.

Kaumudi puja is also observed as Kojagari Lakshmi Puja. As per the Puranas, the Moon God and Goddess Lakshmi are brother and sister. They evolved from Ksheer Sagar Manthan (churning of the Ocean).

Some sources mentioned that in South India, Diwali (Deepavali) was known as Kaumudi Puja or Kaumudi Mahotsavam in olden days.

Kaumudi Puja 2012 date was October 29.
