Karthigai Deepam or Karthikai Deepam is a festival observed in the Tamil month of Karthigai. Karthigai Deepam 2014 date is December 5.
Karthikai Deepam is celebrated on Kartigai Pournami, the Full Moon day in the Kaarthigai Month. This festival coincides with Krithikai nakshatram.
It is also celebrated as the extension of Deepavali. Kartigai Deepam is observed with a lot of gusto and enthusiasm in Tamil Nadu temples and households. The festival is celebrated for three day in the state.
On Kartigai Deepam day, people clean and decorate their houses. They draw kolams, also known as Rangoli, to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. Agal or diyas are kept at puja place and worshipped after lighting. Some deepams are lit everyday from Deepavali day and some people double the number of deepams day by day and they lit a large number of deepams on Kartigai Deepam day.
Kartika Puranam is recited during Kartika Pournami festival for higher merits. Devotees offer charities to poor during the festival days.
Karthigai Deepam festival is celebrated as Karthikai Maha Deepam or Karthikai Brahmotsavam in Tiruvannamalai. This festival is a grand event in Thiruvannamalai Arunachaleshwara temple.
