| Surya Grahan (Solar Eclipse) that occurs on 22 July, 2009 is the first grahanam in this new Hindu year. Hindus are mainly concerned about the Surya Grahan because of its extreme effects or results on people. Surya Grahan of 22 July, 2009 has a great importance because it is a sampoorna surya grahanam (total solar eclipse). Surya Grahan may show some bad effects on natives of some rashis (zodiac signs). It is interesting that this Grahan is a total solar eclipse in some regions of India whereas some parts of India will view this as total lunar eclipse. In some parts of North India (Bihar and Madhya Pradesh), this grahanam is a total lunar eclipse. However, it will be partial eclipse (Pakshik graham) in most of the places in India. It will be viewed as partial solar eclipse in Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Surat, Delhi and Hyderabad. But to remove or slay off the bad effects of grahan, temples are closed. After the release of grahan, some grahana shanti pujas are performed and open the temples. Grahan kaal is the very auspicious time to observe any vrat or saadhana or any other rituals.
