Vishwamitra | Brahmarishi Vishvamitra

Brahmarshi Vishwamitra is one of the most famous rishis of ancient India. Vishwamitra is mentioned in various divine texts and Puranas. He has also authored some portions of the Rigveda. His birth name is Kaushika.

IMPORTANCE

The story of Vishwamitra is found in the Valmiki Ramayana. Mahabharata also tells about the history of Vishwamitra.

Kaushika was the King of Kanyakubja. He was a great warrior. His father’s name is Gaadhi.
The great king kaushika has ruled the kingdom for several thousands of years. After he became a great maharishi, he was praised by several rishis, and by the Sage Vashishta.

Vishwamitra was the one who has asked Lord Rama to give life to Sage Gauthama’s wife Ahalya, who was converted into a stone due to the curse made by her husband Rishi Gauthama.

After he meditates for several thousand years, Lord Brahma, led by other divine gods, awarded the title to Vishwamitra as “BRAHMARISHI”.

Viswamitra is said to have been the founder of Gayatri Mantra.

Viswamitra is featured in many epics and in various works of the Sanatana dharma.

He created a separate heaven for the king Trishanku, through his spiritual powers.

Brahmins belonging to Kaushika or Viswamitragotra were the descendents of Sage Vishwamitra.

There is a separate shrine for Viswamitra in Sri Aabathsahayeswarar Temple, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.

He is a great devotee of the trimurtis. He is widely known for his bravery, wisdom, courage and for his deep devotion on god.

CONCLUSION

He was a great rishi and got the capacity to create a new heaven, and helped those who come to him as refugees. He interacted with Lord Rama during Tretayuga, and asked him and his brother Lakshmana to kill powerful demons. He was also acted as a guru and guided them in archery and in other arts. He was a well-talented person and possessed spiritual powers. He was well-known for doing deep penance even for several thousands of years. He is living in Saptarishi mandala and doing penance.
