26 August 2024 is Vaishnav Janmashtami (ISKCON Janmashtami). It is the Sri Krishna Janmashtami festival for Vaishnava sect of Hindus. Gokulashtami, Sri Krishnashtami, Sri Krishna Jayanti, Saatam Aatham and Rohini Ashtami are the alternate names of Janmashtami.
On this day, Nandotsav, Gopalkala & Dahi Handi are also celebrated in many places of India like Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mathura, Delhi, Lucknow, etc..
Krishnashtami celebrates the birthday of Lord Sri Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is celebrated on Krishna Paksha Ashtami in Shravan Month in Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu & Kannada calendars.
It coincides with Krishna Paksha Ashtami of Bhadrapada Month. It is week-long festival in Gujarat and some other parts of North India.
The main purpose of Lord Krishna’s incarnation was to restore peace in the universe by demolishing evil. Lord Krishna killed thousands of demons and protected sages, noble men and women from them. Krishna played major role in Mahabharata and Kurukshetra war where Pandavas defeated Kauravas and restored their kingdom.
Sri Krishna Temples at Mathura, Vrindavan, Dwarka, Guruvayoor, Udupi and ISKCON Temples are the famous Krishna Temples in India.
