Festival Significance
-
The festival commemorates the divine victory of Lord Subramanya over the demon Soorapadman (or Tarakasura), who had been terrorizing the heavens and earth.
-
According to the Skanda Purana, Lord Subramanya was born from six flames emerging from the six faces of Lord Shiva’s third eye. These flames were carried by the wind and fire gods to the Saravana pond, where the six babies merged into one with six faces, known as Shanmukha (six-faced).
-
The battle between Subramanya and the demons lasted six days, ending on the day of Sashti with the demon’s defeat. Part of the demon Soorapadman was transformed into the peacock (Subramanya’s vahana) and the rest into his banner’s cock symbol.
