Shalivahana Jayanti is the birth anniversary of King Shalivahana (Gautamiputra Satakarni – the Satavahana King). In 2020, Shalivahana Jayanti date is April 3.
Shalivahana Jayanti falls on Dasami in Shukla Paksha of Chaitra Month (Chaitra Vijaya Dashami). The Shalivahana era, also known as the Saka era, is used with Hindu calendars, the Indian national calendar, Balinese and Javanese calender and the Cambodian Buddhist calendar. Its year zero begins near the vernal equinox of the year 78.
The Satavahana king (the king titled as Shalivahana is Gautamiputra Satakarni) is credited with the initiation of the era known as Shalivahana Saka to celebrate his victory against the Sakas in the year 78 CE.
After the demise of Vikramaditya of the Golden Age in Bharat, there were as many as eighteen Kingdoms named Indraprastha, Panchaala, Kurukshetra, Kampila, Antarvedi, Vraja, Ajmer, Marudhanva (Mawaad), Gurjara ( Gujarat), Maharashtra, Dravida (Tamilnadu), Kalinga (Orissa), Avanti (Ujjain), Udupa (Andhra), Banga, Gauda, Magadha and Kaushalya.
It was at this time that Vikramaditya’s grand son ‘Shalivahana’ took over the sovereignty and controllled Shakas, Chinese, Bahmika, Kamarupa, Rome, and Khur desha. He was the 23rd ruler of Satavahana Empire.
