Manneeswarar Temple, Annur, Coimbatore

Sri Manneeswarar temple is situated in the special village cited as Annur, in the district of Coimbatore, in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. The presiding deity of this temple isManneeswarar (Anneeswarar) (Lord Shiva) and his consort is Arunthava Chelvi.

The holy tree of this temple is Vanni tree. The holy water of this temple is Changu theertham. The festival deity is Somaskandar. The agamam or pooja of this temple is called as Karanagama. This temple is approximately 500 years old in this region. The historical name of this special place is Annur.

The festivals that are celebrated in this temple are  Mahasivarathri (February-March), Brahmmotsavamin Margazhi (December-January), Chithirai new year day falling almost on April 14, Chithirai New Year Day (April-May), Vaikasi Puja in February-March, Navarathri in Purattasi (September-October), Vinayaka Chaturthi,  Aani Tirumanjanam (June-July),  Makara Sankranthi (January-February), Skanda Sashti and Iypasi Annabishekam (November-December), Dhanur month and Thiruvadhirai (December-January),  Panguni Uthiram (March-April) and Pradosha days (13th day from New Moon or Full Moon day) are celebrated in the temple.

The main deity is a swayambumurthy. The temple is facing towards west. A large crowd of pilgrims and devotees visit this sacred place on weekends, festival occasions, national holidays and Hindu religious auspicious days.  At present all the devotees, pilgrims and tourists are wholeheartedly invited into the shrine for homams, worship, prayers and rituals. The temple is open for Hindus from 6.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 4.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

According to the local legends, “There are 7 Nagar idols (Snake idols) under the sacred Vanni Tree in the Sarparaja shrine.  Worship here relieves the devotee from snake aspects.”
