Kolaru Pathigam, Collection of Divine Songs on Lord Shiva by Sri Thirugnana Sambandar

Kolaru Pathigam is the collection of divine songs on Lord Shiva, which was written by the great Nayanmar Saint Sri Thirugnana Sambandar. Once as per the request of queen Mangaiyarkarasi who ruled Madurai, Sambandar started his journey from Thiruvadavur to Madurai.

Since the day which he started is not considered as an auspicious day, the great Shaivite devotee, Sri Thirunavukarasar had asked him to start his journey to Madurai on some other day. For that, Sambandar replied, for the devotees of Lord Shiva all the days are considered as auspicious days, and then he composed few songs in praise of Lord Shiva, in order to get relieved from Navagraha Doshams, and also to lead a disease free and a long life in this world.

The contents present in the Kolaru Pathigam are as follows:

Oh Lord Shiva! You are the Lord of the Lords and the king of the Kings, and you are showering unlimited mercy towards your devotees.

Oh Lord Shiva! You are controlling all the gods, goddesses and the entire living beings in the earth, your powers are unlimited, and your significance cannot be explained fully even by your consort Ma Parvati Devi.

Oh Lord Shiva! You have protected your devotee Markandeya from Lord Yama and made him as immortal.

Oh Lord Shiva! By chanting your wonderful names, all of our diseases would get relieved, and we would get a healthy body.

Oh Lord Shiva! You have released Ma Ganga from your matted hair, for the sake of the well-being of the people in the earth.

Oh Lord Shiva! All of your divine attendants are praising on you, and they are chanting your mantra, “OM NAMAH SHIVAYA”, permanently.

Oh Lord Shiva! You are showering your grace even to the tiny insects like ants, and you always remain in the souls of your devotees.

Oh Lord Shiva! You are protecting your devotees from wild animals, bad people and from evil spirits, and you are following them like their shadow, and you are guiding them properly in their each and every activity.

The above songs have been sung by lot of Shiva devotees, and due to that, they have attained the eternal bliss of Lord Shiva, and those who sing these songs would get the blessings of Lord Shiva, and these songs would act as a protective shield for them. These songs were eagerly sung by the ancient Shiva devotees, especially during the time of their holy spiritual journeys.
