Karthaveerya Arjuna Jayanthi or Karthaveerya Utpatthi is celebrated on Kartik Shukla Ashtami, eighth day of Shukla Paksha in Kartik Month. In 2025, Karthaveerya Jayanti date is October 30.

Karthaveerya Arjuna was a great King who ruled Hehaya. Karthaveeryarjuna is worshipped to remove obstacles and to retrieve lost properties. King Karthaveeryarjuna is a great devotee of Lord Dattatreya.

Karthaveerya Upasana is one of the auspicious and meritorious sadhanas for Hindus. He gives every power to face challenges in life and to make life happy and prosperous.

Karthaveeryarjuna, also known as Sahasrabahu Arjuna, is a significant figure in Hindu mythology, particularly within the narratives of the Puranas. He was the king of the Haihayas dynasty, with his capital at Mahishmati, located near the Narmada River in present-day Madhya Pradesh, India. His story is a complex blend of power, divinity, and moral lessons.

Early Life and Divine Boons

Karthaveeryarjuna was born to King Kritavirya and Queen Padmini after his father prayed to Lord Vishnu for a son. As a child, he was initially born without arms due to a curse but later performed severe penance to please Lord Dattatreya, who granted him a thousand arms and immense strength. This transformation enabled him to become a formidable warrior and ruler.

Reign and Character

Karthaveeryarjuna’s reign is often depicted as prosperous and righteous; however, he eventually became egotistical and oppressive. His arrogance led him to challenge divine powers, including that of Indra, the king of the gods. His might was further exemplified by his ability to command respect and fear among both mortals and deities. Despite his initial righteousness, he became embroiled in conflicts with sages and other divine beings. A notable incident involved his encounter with Sage Jamadagni, who owned the divine cow Kamadhenu. Karthaveeryarjuna demanded the cow for his kingdom’s welfare, but upon refusal from Jamadagni, he resorted to violence, ultimately killing the sage. This act set off a chain of events that led to his downfall.

Conflict with Parashurama

The most significant conflict in Karthaveeryarjuna’s life was with Parashurama, the son of Jamadagni. Upon learning of his father’s murder, Parashurama sought revenge against Karthaveeryarjuna and his clan. In a fierce battle, Parashurama defeated Karthaveeryarjuna, leading to the annihilation of the Kshatriya class for 21 generations as retribution for their tyranny. This narrative highlights themes of dharma (righteousness) and karma (the consequences of actions) prevalent in Hindu philosophy.

Cultural Significance

Karthaveeryarjuna is not only remembered as a powerful king but also as a cautionary figure representing the dangers of pride and moral corruption. His legacy continues through rituals such as the Karthaveeryarjuna Homam, which is believed to invoke blessings for health, prosperity, and protection against negative energies. This ritual underscores his enduring significance in contemporary spiritual practices. In summary, Karthaveeryarjuna’s life story encapsulates themes of divine blessing, moral lessons on humility and righteousness, and the consequences of unchecked power within Hindu religious history.
