It is observed on eighth day in Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month in North Indian Hindi calendar. Jitiya is observed by mothers for wellness of their sons. They keep fast throughout the day. Bihari women feel that that every woman has to perform the vrata for happiness and prosperity of the family.
Jivatputrika puja is a Nirjala Vrata as the devotees observe very strict fast and they abstain even from water. Jitiya is commenced for three days.
The first day, the day before Jivatputrika, is known as ‘Nahai-Khai. On that day women take the first morsel only after having their bath.
The second day of Jivatputrika is dedicated to fast and day is known as Khar Jitiya. The third day is for Paaran. Devotees confirm the exact Paaran time from local Pandits or Brahmins.

But on nahai khai day we females also pay homage to our "pitarains"(ie all mother in laws who are dead are collectively called pitarains).It is belived that on this day their soul visit us for food .Hence on nahai khai day food is offered in their name first and then taken as prasad.on this day preferably an old lady is invited on lunch.It is a ritual to be done only by those who have lost their mother in laws.
