Gujarat’s Garba in China, Garba dance under 10-day Indo-China exchange programme

Gujarat’s Navratri Garba will be performed at Guangzhou of China much earlier than India celebrates the 10-day festival of Durga Navratri. On September 22, 2011 nine students from the state will perform Gujarat’s traditional dance before the Chinese at the Guangdong Olympic stadium of Guangzhou.

Nine students from the state will perform Gujarat’s traditional dance before the Chinese at the Guangdong Olympic stadium of Guangzhou. These students have been selected for a ten-day Indo-China exchange programme as part of the National Social Service (NSS) scheme. Of the nine students selected from across Gujarat, four are from M S University (MSU). On Wednesday, MSU vice-chancellor professor Yogesh Singh felicitated these students.

We have decided to carry with us 50 sets of ‘dandiyas’ to perform at the stadium at Guangzhou during our tour,Nitin Parmar, a senior masters in performing arts (sitar) student of MSU’s Faculty of Performing Arts (FPA) told TOI on Wednesday. Nitin along with two other students from FPA – Dewang Macwana, a third year student (tabla), Sagar, a first year student (Kathak) and senior masters of visual arts (painting) student Bhavesh Patel from Faculty of Fine Arts has been selected for the tour which will begin on September 19.

The Gujarat NSS unit has decided that the team of students will carry with them Mahatma Gandhi’s ‘charkha’, ‘khadi’ cloth and ‘sutar ni aati’ which will be presented as memento to the Chinese officials, said dean of Faculty of Social Work professor Magan Parmar, who is also NSS coordinator at MSU.
