Gopi Chandan Tilak

Gopi Chandan Tilak would be usually applied by Madhwa Brahmins, by the devotees of Lord Krishna, and also by the Kannada speaking Hindu community people. The great Saint, Sri Madhwacharya used to apply the Gopi Chandan regularly, and similarly, his followers, the madhwas, also regularly apply it in their foreheads and also in some parts of their body. The great Madhwa Saint Guru Raghavendra, used to apply the Gopi Chandan, and he also insisted the Madhwas to follow the practice, in order to glorify Lord Krishna, and also to sanctify their beloved Guru, Sri Madhwacharya.

The great Krishna Devotee, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and his disciples and followers were regularly applied this holy sandal wood paste on their body, and based on them, the ISKCON followers are also following the same practice of applying the Gopi Chandan on their body. Even the foreigners, who work in ISKCON movement, would apply it, as a part of their daily activity. Gopi Chandan is made out of sandal wood, and it would give chillness to our body, and also would remove the heat present in our body. It purifies our soul, and it would give great spiritual pleasure, since it was applied by many holy saints of Hinduism.

Once Guru Madhwa got the idol of Lord Krishna from a huge Sandal wood from a ship, and he has obtained that divine things as a gift from a merchant. The idol of Lord Krishna was installed in Udupi, and the sandalwood paste was applied by Guru Madhwa, and from then onwards, it has become a regular practice of applying the holy Sandal paste on the body of the Great Guru Madhwa and by his disciples and followers.

Gopi Chandan is considered as a sacred item similar to the sacred ash and the Thiruman. Even some ladies who are the followers of Krishna Bhakti Movement, used to apply it on their foreheads. Though applying such holy things on our body is purely based on our personal interest, but it must be done by us, since it is very much liked by Lord Krishna.
