Girivalam is a ritualistic procedure of Giri Pradakshina, circumambulation of a sacred place. Usually, the term ‘Girivalam’ is pointed at Thiruvannamalai Giri Pradakshinam. February 2022 Purnima is known as Masi Pournami in Tamil calendar, Kumbha Masam Veluthu vavu in Malayalam calendar and Magha Purnima as per all Chandramana Calendars.

The popular Shiva Temple – Arunachaleshwarar Kovil is located in Thiruvannamalai. Girivalam, also known as Malaivalam is a monthly ritual, a token of devotion working a stage in spiritual developments. The illumination of the entire disc of moon, is a monthly feature devotees drawn from different parts of the world visit the temple and phallic symbol placed in the sanctum sanctorum, and the mother Goddess Uma.

Girivalam covers the circular area of about fifteen kilometers of distance.
