Dhanvantari Jayanthi (Dhanvanthari Jayanti or Dhanwantari Jayanti), birthday of Lord Dhanvanthari, is observed on the third day during Diwali festival. In 2025, Dhanvantari Jayanti date is October 19.
It is also known as Dhantrayodashi or Dhanwantari Triodasi or Dhanteras.
On the day of Dhan teras people worship Goddess Mahalaxmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity, and also worship Dhanvantari, the God of health as per Hinduism. Dhanwanthari Jayanti is celebrated on the thirteenth day before Amavasya (No Moon day) in the month of Ashwin or Ashwayuja (October – November).
The Legend or the story of the birth of Dhanvantari:
At the time of Ksheer Sagar manthan (Churning of the Milk Ocean) by Gods and demons for nectar (Amrit), Lord Dhanvanthari emerged from the ocean carrying a pot of nectar in his hand.
On the same day, Goddess Mahalaxmi was also born from the Milk Ocean. Hence, people celebrate the birthdays or Jayanthis of Goddess Mahalakshmi and Lord Dhanwantari on the same day and observe Dhan Trayodashi puja and Dhanvanthari pooja.
May the Dhanvantri Day and Festival of Lights kindle smiles and bring
further prosperity, health, happiness and love in the life of all members.
After reading your blog I have purchased a statue of Lord Dhanvantari. I searched for it and found it at… a website
I would like to know if there is a textual source that explains why dhanvantari jayanti is celebrated along with dhanatrayodashi i.e. on the 13th day of the black fortnight of ashvin. Thanks
