Ambubachi Mela Rituals: Kamakhya Devi Puja celebrations in Assam

Ambubachi Mela, the major festival of Guwahati Kamakhya Devi Shakti Peeth, is celebrated during the Ahaar month in Assamese calendar. It is known as the menses period for Goddess Kamakhya. Ambubashi festival has great significance and attracts thousands of Sadhus, Sanyasins, and Tantriks. There is variety of rituals performed during the three-day Ambubachi Mela.

Devotees drink the water which is given as Teerth. It is said that the water has the power like a cure-all medicine. Devotees can see the Goddess or the vaginal form of Devi Kamakhya covered on red cloth in candlelight. Buffalo sacrifices are often done in Kamakhya Shakti peeth during the festival to please the Goddess.

During Ambubasi Mela, the temple remains closed for 3 days. On this occasion, Kamakhya Devi Kalyan (divine marriage ceremony of Goddess Kamakhya and Lord Kameswar) is celebrated. It is popularly known as ‘Paus-Bia’.
