26 October 2011, Today is Diwali or Deepavali, the festival of lights. Today is the third day of five-day Diwali celebrations. It falls on Amavasya in Ashwin month in Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu & Kannada calendars and on Amavasya in Kartik month in North Indian Hindi calendars.
Lakshmi Puja is the main ritual of Diwali festival. Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped with shodashopachar puja. Lord Kubera is also worshipped along with Lakshmi Devi.
Shubh Labh Puja, Muhurat Puja, Chopda Pujan & Sharda Pujan are some other rituals observed on Diwali day in Maharashtra, Gujarat and some parts of North India.
Special Abhyanga Snan (ritual bath) is performed on Diwali day in Maharashtra as per the muhurat. After abhyanga snana, Aarati is received by men and children from the women in the house in almost all parts of India. Some devotees take Aarti in the evening.
In the evening, stock markets record highest opening as Diwali is marked as the most auspicious time for share broking. It is known as Muhurat Trading.
