Society for Awareness and Vision on Environment (SAVE), a NGO working for environmental protection during Ganesh Chaturthi festival in Hyderabad, will be setting some stalls to distribute eco-friendly clay Ganesha idols in various places of Hyderabad. Another social enterprise based at Pune, Ecoexist, will sell biodegradable Ganesh idols through their official partner’s store in Begumpet, Hyderabad.
PCB, Pollution Control Board, also made all arrangements to distribute clay Ganesh idols in Hyderabad & Secunderabad twin cities. The price of the clay idol is only Rs 5.
HMDA (Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority) has made all arrangements to sell 25,000 clay Ganesha idols at selected places. Big idols of five feet size will be supplied to residential welfare associations, schools, colleges and community groups. In areas where lake protection committees comprise locals, the HMDA will provide the idols free of cost.

No Suresh, idols available are – 10 inches, and 5 feet. As per the Puranas also no idol should be more than 10 feet. I think SAVE may prepare giant ganesh idols for Ganesh Chaturthi 2011…

It is welcoming trend to encourage the eco ganesha, which will be very good effort to save us from unnecessary pollutions and make the lakes poisonous. I never expected this type of efforts from people / voluntariy organizations / societies will come. All the apartments owners association has to take steps in this direction

It is very hard to bring clay ganapati idol for our mandapam from Erragadda (Hyderabad). It would be great if SAVE open some more counters for 5 feet clay idols in some more locations like in Dilsukhnagar, Secunderabad, Malakpet..

It is a great idea to protect the environment by urging people to go in for eco-freinldy Ganesh idols. But I have been seeing from last year that there is not much advertisement in the news papers. Only people are buying the clay idols for installing in the residential societies.
Whereas thousands of people are still buying the POP variety only as small idols for individuals are not being promoted. It will be a huge success if stalls selling small idols are put up in important locations all over the city.
