Somvati Amavasya in November 2009 – Somavathi Amavasya or Ama Somvar Vrat

Somvati Amavasya, also spelt as Somavathi Amavasya, the Amavas that falls on a Somvar (Monday), is considered as auspicious day for Hindu devotees. In November 2009, Somvati Amavasya date is November 16 (Kartika Amavasya as per Telugu, Marathi, Kannada and Gujarati calendars and Margshirsha Amavasya as per other North Indian calendars.
Somvati Amavasya is also known as Amasomvar Vrat or Sarve Amavasya. Devotees keep fasting during Somvati Amavasya and break their fast after performing Shiva and Chandra (Moon God) pooja. People take holy dip during Amavasya and observe panda daan or Pitru tharpan rituals on this day. A large number of devotees throng to the river banks in Gaya, Prayag, Haridwar, Kasi (Varanasi) to observe Punya Snan (ritual bath).
