21 August 2017 is Somvati Amavasya. Somavati Amavasya (Somvati Amavas vrat / Amasomvar Vrat) is an auspicious Amavasya day which falls on Monday.
It falls in Bhadrapad month (Bhadrapad Amavasya) in North Indian Hindi calendars and in Shravan month (Shravan Amavasya) in Amavasyant Chandramana Panchang followed in Maharashtra, Gujarati, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.
This Amavasya is Aavani Masam Amavasai in Tamil calendar, Chinga Masam Karutha Vavu of Malayalam calendar and Bhadra Month Amabashya as per Bengali calendar.
Somvati Amavasy is auspicious for Shiva puja and Chandra Puja. Those who are suffering from Chandra Dosham can perform Chandra puja on this day to get rid of the dosha. Devotees perform punya snan on Somvati day in holy rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, Cauvery, Tungabhadra, etc. This day is also auspicious for Pithru Tharpan or Shraddh rituals for dead ancestors.
In August 2017, it is even more auspicious to observe Somvati Amavasya vrat because it falls on Shravan Amavasya / Bhadrapad Amavasya. Pitru Tharpan is the main ritual of this Amavasya. Here is the mantra to chant on Somvati Amavasya.
