Agni Utsav in Orissa

Agni Utsav is a festival celebrated by farming communities in Orissa. It is similar to sacred bonfire celebrations of Makar Sankranti and Holi festival. In 2012, Agni Utsav date is Febraury 7. It is celebrated on Magh Purnima, Full Moon day in Magh Month in Oriya calendar.

The farming families believe that the rituals are useful for them in coming years. Females of the family clean the houses and the male natives collect wood or other things for lighting the bonfire. All people come together to see the burning of bonfire. In some places, special songs are sung along dancing around the Agni.
