Why do we celebrate Diwali: Historical & religious reasons of Deepavali Celebrations

Have you ever thought why we celebrate the festival of Diwali (Deepavali) every year? This day is not just about fun and excitement but there exist some historical and religious reasons why diwali is a great time to celebrate! Some of such reasons are mentioned below-have a look!

Since the goddess Lakshmi incarnated on the new moon day of the kartik month during the churning of ocean, hence the festival of diwali is celebrated as the birthday of lakshmi.

Do you know that on a day preceding diwali, lord Krishna killed demon king Narakaasur and rescued 16000 women from his captivity? So everyone celebrates this freedom for two days including diwali as a victory festival.

According to Ramayana, it was on the diwali day that lord Ram along with Ma Sita and Lakshman returned to Ayodhya after killing Ravana and conquering lanka. The people living in Ayodhya decorated the whole city with earthen lamps and illuminated it like never before!

On the diwali day, lord Vishnu in his vaman-avtaara (5th incarnation) rescued goddess laksmi from the prison of king Bali. This is one of major reasons for worshipping Ma Lakshmi on diwali festival.

According to the great epic ‘Mahabharata’, it was on this day when pandavas appeared from their 12 years of banishment which happens due to their defeat in the game of gambling against Kauravas. People who love the pandavas celebrate this day by lighting the earthen lamps.

Since greatest Hindu king Vikramaditya was coroneted on diwali day, therefore it has historical significance as well.
