As per the traditional North Indian Hindu calendar, during the waning phase of the moon (Krishna Paksha), in the month of Margashirsh, the Ekadashi that falls is known as Uttpatti Ekadashi. According to the Gregorian calendar, this date occurs in the month of November or December.

According to the Vedic texts and scriptures, the best vrat to begin off with is Uttpatti Ekadashi so most of the Hindu devotees who plan to commence with the Ekadashi vrats, with dedication and devotion starts on this particular day. This Ekadashi is also known as Utpanna Ekadashi.

This particular Vrat or fasting largely serves to wash off all those sins committed during the past in this birth and previous birth. This in turn assists to attain salvation or Mokasha and lead a happy life filled with wealth and health. This Ekadashi has much importance among the Hindu devotees because of its religious and social importance. This fasting or Vrat is strictly followed by the Hindus as per the Vedic practice and rules. This Ekadashi is largely dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

In North India, in the month of Margashirsh, this Ekadashi falls as Uttpatti Ekadashi. According to the Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat calendars, it occurs in the Kartik month. In the Thulam or Vrischika Masam in the Malayalam calendar and in Tamil calendar, in the month is Aippasi or Karthigai Masam, it is falls.

Moreover, in the Orissa, this Ekadashi falls in the month of Margashar calendar. Most of the devotees strictly practicing this particular fast commence their vrat from early sunrise on the said Ekadashi day and successfully break it only on the next day after sunrise, that is, Dwadashi day.
