Onam (Thiru Onam) is the biggest festival of Kerala. In 2022, Thiruonam date is September 8. First Onam date is September 7. Onam is a harvest festival celebrated in the Malayalam Chingam Month (August -September). Third Onam and Fourth Onam dates are – September 9 and September 10 respectively.
Onam festival represents the grand welcome to the demon king Mahabali. As per the popular belief, King Mahabali visits the state of Kerala during the festival of Thiru Onam.
Onam is celebrated for ten days. Starting from the Atham, Onam festival lasts for ten days and the tenth day is the most celebrated Thiru Onam. During Onam festival, Kerala people celebrate many events – games, cultural events, dances and singing songs.
Pookalam (rangoli designs) are the important event of Onam festival. Floral carpets welcoming King Mahabali brings out the cultural front of Onam festival. Pookalam are the floral designs made of flour and different colours and paints.

Onam is the only festival for which I wait year love. I just love everything about Onam. The Onam food is epic and I just love it. My grandmother used to make Olan for Onam all the time. I LIKE ONAM FESTIVAL bcos of Onasadya that is prepared on Thiruonam which is the important day of celebrations. The feast is essentially a nine course meal featuring 11 to 13 dishes and is traditionally served on a banana leaf.
